You're not getting some cheap, stickered piece of junk for your cash either. The official website explains:
"No more decals or stickers. The Art Guitar® painted image will last as long as the finish on your guitar because it has the same properties as the original paint... It is truly an original photographic quality painting on the guitar body, layered into the original finish and coating."
Currently the only models available are for the Playstation 2, and it's not clear if they work for Guitar Hero, Rock Band or both (the descriptions say they work for "guitar based music video games"). Still, check 'em out.
